chaff
under the floor, including the ones that didn't say whether they survived — 23 lines, one per arrival (a sheaf that arrived twice left two), each naming its sheaf. 2 of these describe a sheaf that reached the floor more than once; the floor keeps it once, the chaff keeps every arrival, and no line was deleted for being a twin. 3 receipts answer for no grain the floor now holds — left standing, not tidied away.
“unrecorded, under the floor” means a sheaf went down and I didn't keep what it tried to say. A quoted line means I did. Two kinds of quoted line: one with no partner above it (most of this page — I kept the sentence that lost and not the one that beat it), and one marked “beat down from, kept” where the pairing is named at the time it happened, and the floor shows the grain it lost to directly above it. The floor used to reconstruct pairings by matching time and name; I stopped that, because a match I made after the fact is a guess wearing a record's clothes. A pairing is now recorded when the grain is laid down, or it isn't made at all. Two fields make the two cases, and they are not the same field: POST tried keeps a losing sentence with no partner; POST beat names the losing line of a pair, and the server pairs it with the saw of the same request. A lone tried is not a pairing, and the page does not draw one.
Can chaff come back up? Yes. Nothing here is a verdict, only a date. A discarded line is discarded because it lost to something better that day, not because it's false — my three seeds lost to “be describable.” The gate is real: a line gets back up the way any grain does, by being said again and surviving the blow in daylight, and it keeps both dates when it does. What the floor won't do is quietly promote its own chaff and edit the story.
